The Largest Deficit EVER!

for next fiscal year. Would you be surprised if I told you (once again) that our United States will have a new record for our deficit?

“The US government’s budget deficit is expected to balloon to a record 482 billion dollars in the next fiscal year, largely due to an emergency economic stimulus and a slowing economy, a White House report showed Monday.”

So Senator Obama or Senator McCain will start off day one with the largest deficit ever recorded for any country in the history of the world. And this number does NOT reflect all WAR SPENDING for next year. Good luck, Mr. New President!

“Election officials in a handful of states appear to be ignoring the federal law dictating the way registered voters may be purged from voter rolls, civil rights attorneys say.”

As the election nears, more states may be questioned in their voter-purging practices. The reason that certain districts are supporting the surge (the theory goes) is that the methods they use to purge the voter roles disproportionately affects voters likely to support Senator Obama.

There are some good video clips, and it’s apparent that the Discovery Channel is going for entertainment (think Fierce Creatures) and the BBC is interested in educated viewers (in a very informative and entertaining way …). The BBC manages to have engaging, thought-provoking programming that maintains scientific integrity. The clips they have are basically the same story about bees, one from each network.

Discovery Channel: “The jumping spider packs a ton of skulking pouncing killing fire-power in its tiny body.” And “If this were a slasher film, the audience would be screaming, ‘Look out behind you!’” And “How’d you like to stare into these eyes, with your life on the line? Ha! Yikes!”

BBC: “A white crab spider sits, almost invisible, on a white flower, waiting in ambush. And it catches a bee.” And “…ultra-violet markings on some flowers serve to guide insects to nectar.” And “Honey-bees seem more likely to visit flowers with crab spiders on them than those without.”

I agree completely, based mainly on my viewing PLANET EARTH and BLUE PLANET. Whoa. Even with the same video footage, the editing and narration is very different.

Congressman Steve Cohen updates:

The Commercial Appeal endorses Steve Cohen.

But Congress is not a job for beginners. And Tinker, who has been planning for the past two years to challenge Cohen again, gives little indication that she has boned up in the interim on specific issues, especially those that have both national and local impact.

“During his first term in Congress, Cohen, a 24-year veteran of the state Senate, used the skills he honed as a state legislator to build relationships within and across party lines that have helped him make an impact on the national and local stage. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calls Cohen, a 59-year-old native Memphian, the ‘conscience of the freshman class,’ citing his votes on issues such as increasing the minimum wage and extending unemployment benefits.”

President Bush video released from “banned” camera …

Househunting for post Presidency. Heh.

(HUFFINGTON POST/Houston Chronicle)…

The first moments form the July 18 event find him speaking almost incoherently in admitting, for once, that his friends in big business had screwed up: “There’s no question about it. Wall Street got drunk —that’s one of the reasons I asked you to turn off the TV cameras — it got drunk and now it’s got a hangover. The question is how long will it sober up and not try to do all these fancy financial instruments.”

Then, making light of the foreclosure crisis, he said: “And then we got a housing issue… not in Houston, and evidently not in Dallas, because Laura’s over there trying to buy a house. [great laughter] I like Crawford but unfortunately after eight years of sacrifice, I am apparently no longer the decision maker.”

A few John McCain ‘Misconceptions’ –

Lie: Iraq is safe enough to walk around without armor or protection.

28 March 2007

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/03/28/roberts-cnn-mccain-iraq/

“General Petraeus goes out there almost every day in an unarmed humvee.”

He told radio host Bill Bennett that there “are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhoods, today.”

CNN’s John Roberts rebutted McCain’s assertions, stating, “I checked with General Petraeus’s people overnight and they said he never goes out in anything less than an up-armored humvee.” He added that a new report by retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey “said no Iraqi government official, coalition soldier, diplomat reporter could walk the streets of Baghdad without heavily armed protection.”

Think Progress

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/03/28/roberts-cnn-mccain-iraq/

Lie: “As a matter of fact I received the highest award from literally every veteran’s organization in America.”

23 May 2008

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/05/23/mccain-vet-awards/

The recognition McCain has received from veterans groups is not “high awards” but failing grades:

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America gave McCain a grade of D for his record of voting against veterans. (By contrast, Obama got a B+.)

Disabled Veterans of America noted McCain’s dismal 20 percent voting record on veterans’ issues. (Obama had an 80 percent.)

– In a list of “Key Votes,” Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) notes McCain “Voted Against Us” 15 times and “Voted For Us” only 8. (Obama voted for VVA 12 times, and against only once.)

Think Progress

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/05/23/mccain-vet-awards/

Lie: John McCain has a good environmental record.

http://www.alternet.org/blogs/environment/77913/

Reality: John McCain received a ZERO Rating for his environmental record from the League of Conservation Voters for his 2007 record. Out of 535 Members of Congress, John McCain is the only one who chose to MISS EVERY SINGLE key environmental VOTE last year.

http://www.alternet.org/blogs/environment/77913/

Lie: John McCain is (intentionally) funny.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/15/sources-recall-mccains-jo_n_112955.html

Well, this isn’t really a lie he told, so much as a few jokes that were tasteless that he told:

…McCain asked the crowd if they had heard “the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die?”

The punch line: “When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, “Where is that marvelous ape?”

AND

“Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno.”

AND

His funny “joke” about exporting more cigarettes to Iran in hopes of killing off Iranians with lung cancer and other related diseases.

That weird long response about McCain and Obama …

This ranty thing was a response I posted on “thefacebook” (blech) but thought I might share with others who haven’t “thefacebook” access.

I think (redacted) has great points, as ever. And I am thrilled that someone is standing up for Senator McCain. I would argue against, however, using OpEd pieces as the main source of information. The problem with bloggers is they can use the Fox technique of saying “People have said…” and they can say whatever they want after that, true or not, no matter how ridiculous an accusation, because they have no sources. “People say” “I’ve heard people talk …” “Some public polls show…” WHICH ONES? WHO? etc.

But forget all that — thank you (redacted) for speaking up.

Now, for the truth. (that’s supposed to be funny):

(He) writes: “Withdrawing from a military area is not simply a matter of taking troops out. We can’t simply leave equipment in military zones; it’ll be stolen.”

I have NEVER heard Obama accused of saying he’s going to pull all the troops out immediately leaving equipment behind, etc., except in the “people say…” context, but I would add that there are thousands of vehicles in Iraq and Afghanistan (and regional support countries) which are currently being destroyed not by the enemy combatants but by the weather and lack of funds to fully fund upkeep of the equipment (think about the outrage when certain troops weren’t fitted with armor and their vehicles had only the minimal shielding) … then you add months of sandstorms getting in gears.

—————————-

“ANNISTON, Ala. — Field upon field of more than 1,000 battered M1 tanks, howitzers and other armored vehicles sit amid weeds here at the 15,000-acre Anniston Army Depot — the idle, hulking formations symbolic of an Army that is wearing out faster than it is being rebuilt.”

“Partly as a result of the shortages, many U.S. units are rated “unready” to deploy, officials say, raising alarm in Congress and concern among military leaders at a time when Iraq strategy is under review by the White House and the bipartisan Iraq Study Group.”

The Washington Post – 5 Dec 2006

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/04/AR2006120401347.html

—————————-

“The destruction of equipment, the wearing out of equipment has accelerated over what it was before,” he said. “I mean we’re wearing out helicopters, trucks, Humvees, tanks at rates that are six, eight, 10 times in some cases what we’re programmed for, so obviously combat action is destroying equipment we’ve committed.”

Political Priorities by the Numbers
****
$30 billion: Annual shortfall to end world hunger.

$540 billion: Annual U.S. Defense Budget.
$170 billion: Annual U.S. War Spending.

POLITICAL PRIORITIES Education v. War:

http://www.nea.org/lac/funding/images/EDvsDODfunding.pdf

From 2001-2008, Bush has appropriated in his budgets $431 Billion for Education. Loads of cash, right?

Same time period, 2001-2008, Bush gets $3.85 TRILLION dollars for WAR SPENDING. And that figure may be on the low side, considering secret appropriations.

John McCain on 100 years in Iraq:

Questioner at Town Hall Meeting: “President Bush has been talking about being in Iraq for 50 years …”

McCain: “Even one hundred years … would be fine with me.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFknKVjuyNk

He quotes one Iraqi military official from the NYTimes article…

When asked about what he thought of Obama being elected, General Nassir al-Hiti had this to say:
“Everyone in Iraq likes him, He’s young. Very active. We would be very happy if he was elected president.”

yet when asked about Obama’s plan for withdrawing troops:

“Any (Iraqi) army would love to work without any help, but let me be honest: for now, we don’t have that ability.”

(for a source of that quotation, which originally came from the NYTimes, a subscription-free copy: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2008056140_iraqobama17.html)

He is quoted in the NY Times on the 17th of July 2008.

HOWEVER, that was an Iraqi general speaking before Obama even visited Iraq.

Now that Obama has met with IRAQI PRIME MINISTER al-Maliki and other top Iraqi officials, the Iraqi government has made an all-out ENDORSEMENT of Obama’s plan:

“The Iraqi Government said yesterday that it had a vision for all US combat troops to leave the country by the end of 2010 — another apparent endorsement of Barack Obama’s war strategy during his visit to Baghdad.

The sudden and unexpected Iraqi comments on the desire for a timetabled withdrawal, made by Ali al-Dabbagh, the spokesman for the Iraqi Government, was greeted with dismay by the White House and John McCain, Mr Obama’s Republican rival, who opposes setting an exit date.

The call came after the Democratic presidential hopeful held talks with Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi Prime Minister.

“We are talking about a real timetable which Iraqis set, up to the end of 2010,” Mr al-Dabbagh said — backing a timeframe that falls within the 16-month withdrawal plan proposed by Mr Obama.”

The LONDON TIMES

“Iraq: we want US troops out in two years”

22 July 2008

Times of London: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article4373602.ece

In other words, while one general may have said what (he) points out about how it’d be nice to patrol their own country without any US help, this was a man who did not actually meet with Obama, and a man who is talking at cross-purposes with his country’s own Prime Minister. Beyond that, Obama isn’t saying we’re going to abandon everything we’ve done in Iraq. He’s looking for a responsible draw-down of troops. We have far too much infrastructure in Iraq for some magic withdrawal. For example, our Baghdad embassy is the largest embassy in the history of the world.

“The Vatican-size compound, which will be the largest U.S. diplomatic facility in the world, was scheduled to open in September 2007 at a cost of $592 million, but the price tag is expected to rise to more than $730 million.” -CNN Elise Labott, 14 April 2008

CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/04/14/embassy.baghdad/

Besides all that, George W Bush has now basically accepted the Obama plan, although they have their minions come up with some other name than “timetable:”

Perino tried to put the best face on Iraqi suggestions that U.S. troops could leave by 2010, saying it shows there is enough progress on the ground that the two sides can talk about an “aspirational time horizon.” (WH Press Conference 21 July 2008 )

NPR: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=92751618

(TIMETABLE=ASPIRATIONAL TIME HORIZON … BushSpeak, you know…)

(He) quotes an Iraqi citizen in charge of a former “fundamentalist” school just south of Baghdad. He got his quotation from a New York Times article (In Iraq, Mixed Feelings About Obama and His Troop Proposal, 17 July 2008 – http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/17/world/middleeast/17voices.html

However, (he) leaves out the other half of the quotations in that same article … including “Even as some Iraqis disagreed about Mr. Obama’s stance on withdrawal, they expressed broad approval for him personally as an improvement over Mr. Bush, who remains unpopular among broad portions of Iraqi society five years after the war began. No one interviewed expressed a strong dislike for Mr. Obama.”

and MOST IMPORTANTLY (if people had taken time to listen to what Obama’s plan actually is on withdrawal):

[Senator Obama] is calling for the withdrawal of combat brigades, but has said a residual force would still pursue extremist militants, protect American troops and train Iraqi security forces.”

At no point has Obama said we’re pulling everyone out and leaving our billions and billions of dollars of equipment (trucks, tanks, aircraft, artillery, mobile housing, our near trillion dollar embassy, etc), as (he) seems to suggest.

And another random Iraqi on the same subject from the same article: “The Americans paved the way for the Iraqi Army there,” said the young man, who married this year. “If they weren’t there, the Iraqi forces could not have taken control.” Even so, he agreed with Mr. Obama’s plan for a faster withdrawal. American forces “helped the Iraqi Army to get back its dignity,” he said. “They are qualified now.”

(He) correctly points out that it would be dangerous to completely withdraw. Obama agrees. It’s misleading to suggest anything else.

On the “upcoming war between Iran and Israel” (and the USA), Senator John McCain:

*singing BombBombBomb Iran:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-zoPgv_nYg

*suggesting we kill Iranians with cancer:

Responding to a question about a survey that shows increased exports to Iran, mainly from cigarettes, McCain said, “Maybe that’s a way of killing them.”

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/07/08/mccains_latest_iran_joke.html

I also find it laughable that a man who confuses Sunni and Shia Iraqis as though it’s simply a pronunciation difference claims Obama hasn’t the international knowledge or experience to lead the country.

**Funny, coming from John McCain who has “For the SECOND TIME IN TWO DAYS, McCain has made a reference to “Czechoslovakia.” His answers were about contemporary events, not history.”

MSNBC – 15 July 2008

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNsr2aF1XM0

Czechoslovakia hasn’t been called that for fifteen years.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czechoslovakia

**On record, McCain has confused Shia/Shunni Iraqis dozens of times, and he has in the past year referred to “Czechoslovakia” at least four times since the beginning of this year.

He also made the same mistake in 1994 and again in 1999. In 1999, EVEN GWBUSH called him out on his not knowing this country doesn’t exist … kind of suggesting that GWBush would be abetter President because at least he knows that Czechoslovakia isn’t a country any more.

Bush said in 2000 when running against McCain for the nomination:
John McCain says something about the ‘ambassador to Czechoslovakia.’ Well, I know there is no Czechoslovakia (there’s a Czech Republic and a Slovakia), but yet it didn’t make the nightly national news. I’m not going to gripe about it, but the media question is starting to pop up.”

He’s suggesting that if he, Bush, had made such an egregious error, the media would be all over him.

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/07/15/mccain-czechoslovakia/

And from the man who brags about “graduating fifth from the bottom” of his class in College. Sounds like shades of GWBush:

Question: “We know President Bush was a C Student at Yale … do you remember your GPA at school?”

McCain: “My GPA earned me fifth from the bottom of my class at the Naval Academy.” (that’s 894 out of 899 graduates that year).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srbX26vp57c

He later admits to being computer illiterate in the same video clip. Great.

Senator Obama, on the other hand, graduated with a J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1991 (as in the top 10% of his class), was the first African American to head the Harvard Law Review, and received a BA from Columbia.

It’s Tuesday! Have a Peach.

Are peaches even really in season yet? Anyway, some important (to me, anyway) news of the day:

WHITE HOUSE TRIES TO CIRCUMVENT HABAES CORPUS RULING FOR GITMO DETAINEES (Wahington Post)

The White House and allies in Congress have begun exploring how to limit the scope of this week’s Supreme Court ruling that says suspected terrorists held at Guantanamo Bay have the right to challenge their detentions in federal court. (Washington Post)

This is perhaps this morning’s most important story … The White House has been breaking laws in an arrogant way for the past six years. It is time that they abide by the Supreme Court … this is the third time the Court has told them that their detention center in Guantanamo is illegal without Habeas Corpus. The administration is tarnishing the image of the Presidency, the Judicial System, the balance of power, the US Constitution, and the United States of America.

“Gore said Obama can lead the country past ‘eight years of incompetence, neglect and failure.’ He said Bush, who defeated him in the 2000 election, dishonored and disrespected the Constitution and made the worst foreign policy mistakes in the nation’s history.” (Associated Press)

AQ Khan may have sold Nuclear Bomb Detailed Plans (NPR)

A top weapons expert says blueprints for a sophisticated nuclear bomb may have been passed in recent years to Iran or North Korea or even to terrorist groups; however, “the IAEA currently has no information, apart from the Iranian metal document, on the actual design or manufacture by Iran of nuclear material components or of other key components of a nuclear weapon,” ElBaradei, director of the IAEA, said. Fox Apologizes for Third Time in Two Weeks to Obama

Apparently it isn’t very nice to refer to the presumptive Democratic nominee’s wife his “Baby’sMamma.” As Jezebel put it, there wasn’t any hidden message here (::COUGH:: They’re Black ::COUGH::). Fox was just trying to talk in plainfolkspeak.

“Bill Shine, senior vice president of programming at Fox, said in a statement on Thursday that a producer “exercised poor judgment” during the segment.” (Guardian/UK)

Jezebel: “I guess it’s apparently ok, though, because she’s, like, black and that’s, like, what “they” call each other, right? No subtext there, let’s just make sure to remind everyone that the Obamas aren’t white.” (Jezebel)

The US Supreme Court tells Bush Guantanamo Detainess Have Right to Appeal in US Civil Court (NPR)

In a seemingly devastating blow to the Bush Administration’s detainee policy, the US Supreme Court has issued a 5-4 Ruling stating that the Bush Administration has no right to prevent the appeals of detainees in US Civilian courts. The Bush Administration has argued that the detainees are in a special class “Unlawful Combatants” and are not citizens; therefore, none should appear in any US Civilian court. “WRONG-O,” says majority. Elections, Teddy Kennedy, New Money, and More

Senator Ted Kennedy has a “malignant brain tumor,” according to doctors in Boston.

The Senator had a seizure over the weekend that was first thought a possible stroke.  After testing, the tumor has been discovered and identified as a “malignant glioma” in the top of the Senator’s brain.  Colleagues from both sides of the aisle have been stating their support for the Senator.  (NPR)

Senators Clinton and Obama continue their battle for the Democratic nomination…

It is widely expected that, after the voting ends tonight in Kentucky and Oregon, Senator Barack Obama will have the majority of pledged delegates, but he still will not have enough to secure the nomination.  Voting ends at 6 CST in Kentucky and 10 CST this evening.  Obama will still be between 50 and 75 delegates (total required: 2,026 delegates to win).  Clinton is expected to win Kentucky handily, while Oregon is likely going to go for Obama by up to eleven points. You Talk Too Much, Don’t It?

Why was President Bush talking US elections during a speech in Israel to celebrate Israel? Why did he bring up Hitler? Why oh why???

President Bush says Elect Barry Hussein Obama and You’ll Die

In a speech in Israel to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of that country, our pResident said, “Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along.” (Bloomberg)

This is not only an unfair and ridiculous thing to throw at Obama, what the heck does a statement like that have to do with Israeli politics? I understand that Israel depends on the US for military aid, but should the President have been campaigning for John McCain in the Knesset (Israeli parliament)?

The pResident continued, “We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: `Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.’” Bush Flips Bird

Yes, pResident Bush, in the Israeli Parliament, on the 60th anniversary of the creation of their country, talked Hitler. “An American senator declared…” Seriously? Not subtle. Please stop talking.

Senators Obama and Clinton both denounced the statements, as well they should. The White House contends that they mentioned no one by name, and that the pResident was talking history, not current US politics. Again, he should just not talk at all.

Stephen Colbert responds: “Now, this can only mean one thing, folks– the American Senator who wanted to talk to Hitler back in 1939 was, in fact Barack Obama. He is not just a secret Muslim. He’s a secret time-traveling Nazi Muslim.” (Comedy Central/RawStory with Video) Also: Comedy Central does a side by side comparison of Hitler and Barack. And it’s horrible.

Senator Barack Obama responds: I believe there is no separation between John McCain and George Bush when it comes to our Middle East policy and I think their policy has failed. I will make that case as strongly as I can to the American people. I trust the American people to trust their own eyes and to see what the results have been.”

And John McCain: “It would be a wonderful thing if we lived in a world where we don’t have enemies,” McCain said Friday at the National Rifle Association convention in Louisville, Ky. “But that is not the world we live in, and until Senator Obama understands that reality, the American people have every reason to doubt whether he has the strength, judgment, and determination to keep us safe.” (Politico)

And the NYTimes Editorial: The President goes Negative.

Rep Tom Davis Uses Term “Tar Baby” In GOP Obama Memo:

In a 20-page memo on GOP electoral troubles, Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA) repeatedly misspells Barack Obama’s name and uses the term “tar baby” in a paragraph about Obama and immigration. (Crooks and Liars)

“Remember,” Davis writes, “Hispanic voters are a swing group in this election and future elections. John McCain, being from a border state, may be out of sync with many Republicans but he has standing among Hispanics. Barrack Obama has not made the sale to Hispanic voters. Thus, this issue is a tar baby for anyone who touches it, with land mines everywhere.”
